The Fifth Annual San Juan Citizens Oktoberfest Promoting Sustainability and Fun!

The event kicks off with “O’ ZAPFT IS” “It’s been Tapped” ceremony starts at 11:00 am with the tapping of the first keg by Mayor of Durango Renee Parson.

Food and craft vendors: all in blocks 9-11 downtown Durango.

Kids Activities: Bring your kids down for a jumpin’ good time in the Children’s Museum air castle. Get their faces painted and enjoy kid friendly crafts. Kids' activities sponsored by Durango Discovery Museum, Durango Nature Studies and Children’s Museum of Durango.

Fall Hiking in Silverton, CO

With the fall colors peaking at this time of the year, there is no better place to hike than Southwestern Colorado, and no finer place in Southwest Colorado than the majestic high country surrounding Silverton. Local Trails

Christ of the Mines Shrine - Located northwest of Silverton, this is an easy 1 mile walk that provides a nice overlook of the town of Silverton. Great for an afternoon walk before the train leaves.

Cement Creek - Located north of Silverton, starts at Memorial Park and takes you on a peaceful walk along the river.

Kendall Mountain - located southeast of Silverton, across the Animas River, past Cement Creek. This trail veers right and wraps around Kendall Mountain. It is 6.5 miles, one-way.

Lackawana Mill - located southeast of Silverton, starting at the Kendall Mountain Recreation Area, this trail provides a relaxing walk through a wooded area.

Your first two nights you'll stay in Durango, Colorado, at your choice of the Strater Hotel, Holiday Inn, or Days End. The Strater Hotel offers a continental breakfast each morning. Applebee’s Restaurant is on site at the Holiday Inn. All hotels are conveniently located to downtown Durango and the local trolley.

Your first morning in Durango you'll ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, which winds through the spectacular and breathtaking canyons in the remote wilderness of the two million acre San Juan National Forest. You will relive history with the sights and sounds of yesteryear on this 1882 adventure from Durango to Silverton, Colorado. The coal-fired, steam-operated locomotives are maintained in their original 1923-1925 vintage condition. In Durango, take time to enjoy the Railroad Museum, located in the rail yard roundhouse featuring full-size locomotives, maps, photos, artwork, memorabilia, and authentic collectibles. While in Silverton, visit the Freight Yard Museum at the depot and learn about the history of the Rio Grande Railway as a freight line, enjoy lunch, and stroll this historic town's many quaint shops. 

You will return to Durango early evening. You’ll have time to browse the downtown shops, have a fabulous dinner at one of Durango’s many fine eating establishments, and take in the Diamond Circle Melodrama and Vaudeville. 

On Day 2 of your trip, you will take a scenic 1 hr. and 15 min. drive on Highway 160 East to Mesa Verde National Park. (Park entrance fee is not included in package price. Gold passes are accepted). Old Hundred Gold Mine Tour in Silverton, CO



 Experience the secret world of the underground gold miner as you tour the Old Hundred, a mine that operated from 1904 until the 1970s. Put on a yellow rain slicker and hard hat before boarding a rail car that will take you 1500 feet underground into the actual mining operation. You’ll see what it was like to go underground in search of the elusive treasure. The old mining equipment is still in place, awaiting another opportunity to strike it rich.

Tours depart every hour on the hour, May through mid-October. The Old Hundred is located just 5 miles east of Silverton on Highway 110 (turn right at Howardsville). 2008 Blues & Brews Festival in Telluride
